I also am regularly exploited. Seasonally (2 months each spring and 2 months in the autumn), I can earn substantial overtime pay by working 15-20 hours extra each week.

Foolishly, I thought this extra money would help me finish my education without resorting to student loans, and boost my savings for a house down payment. Apparently, I was suffering from false consciousness or some other pernicious unawareness of my victimhood.

Seriously, though, there have been a few news stories about workers at Foxconn being upset that their overtime is reduced. Much of the overtime is in short bursts to meet quota or finish a project. The recent audit found that the majority of workers are satisfied with their hours, or wish they could work more.

    Love this!

I have worked many times in my life far more than 40 hours/per week and NEVER felt “exploited” but rather “enriched” by the extra pay, extra experiences, extra bonding with my fellow workers, extra learning by the jobs, etc.

My wife is retiring soon, and the # of hours/wk she has worked the last few years is probably around 50-60, and she likewise never thought she was exploited, but rather also enriched, in that most gratifying job of her 40+ year career.
