The power of cultural stereotypes — Mahal anecdote

Raj Mahal, a former Wall Street trader who is now a comedian, reports this conversation:

‘Last week I was talking to this girl at a bar and she asked me what I did. I told her I am a comic but I used to work on Wall Street. She said, “Thank god. Because all Wall Street guys are douchebags.” I asked why she thought that and her response was, “Well, I don’t really know any Wall Street guys. It seems you guys all make a lot of money so you must be doing something shady.”‘

To be able to say —

“Well, I don’t really know any black people …”
“Well, I don’t really know any gays …”
“Well, I don’t really know any tenured professors …”
“Well, I don’t really know any [fill in the blank] …”

— and immediately follow it with an insult about a whole class of people.

i’ve recently thought about exactly this. take the worst of any group, apply that standard to the entire group. that’s seems to have become acceptable in mainstream political news. frightening
