Painting privilege — against “side-ism” in art

Why should the front of a painting be privileged over its back? Virtually all art is shown one side only — the arbitrarily chosen “front” side. Meanwhile, the “back” is consigned to obscurity and neglect.

Yet there’s nothing inherently superior about the blank surface chosen to have paints bestowed upon it. It neither earned nor otherwise deserves its superior status. Equal time for all sides.

Especially old “master” (note the power word) paintings, which have been most viewed, should first be unseen. That will both liberate the unseen and make up for the dominant side’s injustice.

I hereby declare the Anti-Sideism in Art Campaign. To begin, all paintings in museums and homes will be turned to face the wall for one week.
