Fear of Technology? FEE panel on Covid-19 and Technology

I was happy to be invited to participate in this panel organized by the Foundation for Economic Education. My remarks focused on how Covid-19 has made philosophers of us — as we were confronted with the immediacy of life and death, the importance of work and leisure, how much control we have control over our destinies, and our fears and love of technologies. My first set of remarks begin at about the 14:45 mark.

  1. Stephen I have admired your work over the years, especially your commitment to reason.

But I’m disappointed by your business as usual response to the riots, protests and attempts to take over our culture by the the communist left . What is needed intellectually and morally is s repudiation of the beliefs that have contributed to this situation: beliefs in collective guilt, victimhood, identity politics, the denial of objective truth and of course our
old friend, altruism. These beliefs now represent an existential threat to America as we know it. I ask that you man the barricade (intellectually speaking) and devote your energies to this task.

  2. Hi Carl:
I agree that we need more “repudiation of the beliefs that have contributed to this situation: beliefs in collective guilt, victimhood, identity politics, the denial of objective truth and of course our old friend, altruism.”
    Thanks for your compliment, too.
Regarding “business as usual”: You posted this comment in response to the FEE Covid-19 and Technology panel discussion, which was narrowly focused and recorded before any of the Floyd-inspired protests and then riots occurred.
