Nietzsche’s Natural Slaves and Masters [Open College podcast]

Episode 43 in my Open College with Dr. Stephen Hicks podcast series:

“Where does morality come from? Are moral codes merely conscious formulations of our strongest subjective needs? Nietzsche is one of the great critics of human psychology — contemptuously noting most people’s weakness — their cowardice and conformity. Can we all “Live dangerously?” How does Nietzsche’s scorn for Plato, Christians, Kant , and the welfare state intersect with the two main audiences his work attracts? Who among us can become the new masters? Dr. Hicks raises these and many other critical questions surrounding Nietzsche’s attack on slave morality and altruism.”

  1. Master race

Collectivism is always animated and controlled by a class of people who see themselves as a master race. There are two-part to that red line. One is from the elite perspective, the master race itself. The other is from the cattle of that master race (Popper). But first thing first, the expression master race or race of the guardian has nothing to do with a race, but a group of individuals who act as if they had special abilities far above the average person that it makes them so different as if they were another race. The master race is a modern term but the idea behind goes back to the time humanity was still confine to Africa, at the time human lived in small tribes. The social organization was similar to those of social animals with an alpha and the rest of the group. The master race is an attempt to revive that model by defining a group of elites as an entity that has the role of an alpha. That group defines what it means to be human. Everything they do is the right thing and they can not be opposed or even questioned, even when they are blatantly wrong. That group is non-Galilean, they do not use an external point of reference to determine the truth, and non-Socratic, they do not conceive that they might be wrong. They are primitive in their thinking and by any definition, with no connection to reality whatsoever. It’s magical thinking, the ability to come up with solutions having no logical connections. (ex: put men and women on par at work and the world will be better. Why? Because… it’s obvious, self-evident). They are tyrannical, incoherent in their decisions, and very deceptive when interacting with the population because they fear no retaliation. In the long run, they become deranged, literally insane. Absolute power to not corrupt you absolutely it makes you insane by severing you from reality.

What the modern population failed to understand is that the master race can count on zealous servants drinking from the power of their masters. In return, the master race is, even more, convinced that they are indeed a master race since those zealous servants exist (of course, it’s circular reasoning). Internet is giving us a modern insight into the master race and zealous servants’ symbiosis. On the Internet, young women are filming their life and fantasy, and they make big money from it because millions of men are willing to pay to see them. One of those successful young women was interviewed regarding the morality of their work (there is no law to forbid their work). She answered, and many think like her, that it is normal that men worship women because they are deities. What that young women express is that since men act as worshippers it proves that she is a deity and that it is a natural behavior, therefore there is no cause to feel amoral. She doesn’t understand that it is an instinct that is the cause of the behavior of those men, not her. Similarly, there is a natural mechanism, more or less prevalent among humans, to do the right thing in order to stay in the tribe, because outside the tribe it’s death. How can we know what’s is right or wrong? That’s the role of the alpha (origin or morality?), that’s the role of the master race. The zealous servants are people who need to do the right thing, and they serve the master race to get that validation. It’s instinctive and they cannot be autonomous individuals, they will always be in search of a tyrant to serve, like those men worshipping young women, no matter how irrational the whole thing is. It’s not a black and white situation, most can learn to have controlled behavior (Mises) to curb their instincts, this is required to be civilized but to escape it is the easy way, the temping solution.

What are the observable markers of the master race? A) They have one obsession, to shrink the population. It is not about overpopulation, even if it is advertised as such, but the ratio between the number of members of the master race and the population (Popper). The objective of the master race is always to reduce that ratio, therefore the population because they are always a risk for them. B) They have a compulsive need to control the people in every aspect of their life “for their own good”, by fear of course but also because they are addicted to being almighty, and need to exercise their power to satisfy that addiction. Yes, they are monsters. Ayn Rand, The Comprachicos. C) What applies to you does not apply to them in all aspects of life. Economic, social, justice… and they have no problem when being caught violating their rules because if you have to follow their rules, they follow their rules which they can interpret or change accordingly to their needs. Know your place they teach you.

Evolutionary psychology is a good tool to understand the origin of the master race and their cattle, but to understand their interactions game theory proved to be very useful. The power of the master race is not only in their power per se but also that they form a coalition. You can then analyze their interaction as a repetitive game (model of interactions) based on the prisoner dilemma for example. This was done by Robert Axelrod, at least partially. Just to give you an idea “The futility of isolated revolt (by low-status player) is a consequence of the immutability of the other players … this leads the higher-status players to be concerned with their reputation for firmness”. This is the kind of knowledge that will be needed to build the next generation of civilization.
