I am a supporter of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, the nation’s leading institution devoted to fighting for intellectual freedom on college campuses.
My friend and intellectual colleague, David Ross, has written an excellent statement [pdf] explaining why he supports FIRE. Dr. Ross is a mathematics professor and so is very sharp as well as being, for a math professor, uncommonly lucid when using plain English. My own contribution to the free speech debates, Free Speech and Postmodernism [pdf], is available for free at FIRE’s website and as a monograph at Amazon.
As an example of FIRE’s work, I recommend this eye-opening and blood-boiling twelve-minute video illustrating the biggest problem we have in higher education: anti-intellectual ideologues abusing their power over students. I have great respect for Emily Brooker’s courage in standing up to the bullies.
