Am I really a Marxist revolutionary?

[Update: I received a note of apology from the author and the post has been retracted. Thank you to everyone who acted on my behalf to correct the error.]

What can I say?

sh-qua-marxist-390

According to Andrew Breitbart’s Big Government website, Professor Stephen Hicks of Rockford College is a Marxist devoted to educating cadres of revolutionaries.

A good case of an under-researched post that jumps to a very wrong conclusion. (Thanks to Hal Hollis for the pointer.)

Here is the full context for the video clip — my fifteen-part series of lectures on the Philosophy of Education, in which I present many philosophies, Marxism included.

Now I wish I had a photo-shopped image of myself with a red beret and a t-shirt saying something nasty about capitalism. That would be proof indeed.

For a good statement of my actual philosophy of liberal arts education, I recommend Chapter 2 of John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty, a key portion of which I excerpt here:

mill‘There is a class of persons (happily not quite so numerous as formerly) who think it enough if a person assents undoubtingly to what they think true, though he has no knowledge whatever of the grounds of the opinion, and could not make a tenable defence of it against the most superficial objections. … [T]his is not the way in which truth ought to be held by a rational being. This is not knowing the truth. Truth, thus held, is but one superstition the more, accidentally clinging to the words which enunciate a truth. …
‘If the cultivation of the understanding consists in one thing more than in another, it is surely in learning the grounds of one’s own opinions. Whatever people believe, on subjects on which it is of the first importance to believe rightly, they ought to be able to defend against at least the common objections. But, some one may say, “Let them be taught the grounds of their opinions. It does not follow that opinions must be merely parroted because they are never heard controverted.” …
‘But when we turn to subjects infinitely more complicated, to morals, religion, politics, social relations, and the business of life, three-fourths of the arguments for every disputed opinion consist in dispelling the appearances which favour some opinion different from it. The greatest orator, save one, of antiquity, has left it on record that he always studied his adversary’s case with as great, if not with still greater, intensity than even his own. What Cicero practised as the means of forensic success, requires to be imitated by all who study any subject in order to arrive at the truth. He who knows only his own side of the case, knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them. But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side; if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion. The rational position for him would be suspension of judgment, and unless he contents himself with that, he is either led by authority, or adopts, like the generality of the world, the side to which he feels most inclination. Nor is it enough that he should hear the arguments of adversaries from his own teachers, presented as they state them, and accompanied by what they offer as refutations. That is not the way to do justice to the arguments, or bring them into real contact with his own mind. He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them; who defend them in earnest, and do their very utmost for them. He must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form; he must feel the whole force of the difficulty which the true view of the subject has to encounter and dispose of; else he will never really possess himself of the portion of truth which meets and removes that difficulty. Ninety-nine in a hundred of what are called educated men are in this condition; even of those who can argue fluently for their opinions. Their conclusion may be true, but it might be false for anything they know: they have never thrown themselves into the mental position of those who think differently from them, and considered what such persons may have to say; and consequently they do not, in any proper sense of the word, know the doctrine which they themselves profess. They do not know those parts of it which explain and justify the remainder; the considerations which show that a fact which seemingly conflicts with another is reconcilable with it, or that, of two apparently strong reasons, one and not the other ought to be preferred. All that part of the truth which turns the scale, and decides the judgment of a completely informed mind, they are strangers to; nor is it ever really known, but to those who have attended equally and impartially to both sides, and endeavoured to see the reasons of both in the strongest light. So essential is this discipline to a real understanding of moral and human subjects, that if opponents of all important truths do not exist, it is indispensable to imagine them, and supply them with the strongest arguments which the most skilful devil’s advocate can conjure up.’

  1. I have your evil Marxist diatribe on “Ayn Rand and Contemporary Business Ethics” sitting right here next to that commie manifesto on Postmodernism and the “Art of Reasoning” thing you did with David “Mao Tze Tung” Kelley right here on my bookshelf. Time to re-read them though. I think I got the wrong message 🙂 Seriously… what a NUT.

  2. My favorite part is that there are clearly books about business right behind you in that video. Clearly visible are books about Richard Branson and Walt Disney. Would someone who noticed those books assume that you were merely a communist subversive studying his capitalist enemies? 😉

  3. Congratulations, Stephen! I sensed something like that in you .. . Not sure though what that was …

A thoughtful look? A smile? I do remember your mentioning Marx name in a few of your works .. .

Glad I always was extra careful with you.

GS (formerly, before I switched sides, known as your comrade in arms)

  4. My question is: how did he FIND this one lecture among all the other work you have on the web?? He must’ve done some quick-and-dirty Google search on “Marxism” and “lectures” or some such to come up with this – not bothering to check the context whatsoever.

  5. The Chevron (formerly of the University of Waterloo) would be so pleased to know that you are one of them now. Unless….were you secretly a Marxist in the mid-80s?

  6. Just to be safe, Stephen, put a biography of Harpo Marx in the background of all your pictures. That way, there can be no mistake what kind of Marxist you are.

  7. Well that would explain the Che Guevara t-shirt you were wearing when I met you at the Atlas Shrugged movie preview last December. 😉

That fellow certainly did a terrible job of research. Glad it’s straightened out. And for the record, you were NOT wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt at the Atlas Shrugged movie preview.

  8. Marsha: No doubt you are correct. What you are seeing is what passes as “serious research” in conservative circles. Once you are convinced that you speak on behalf of some deity then there is little need for deceptive things like facts. We blogged about this absurdity on our blog. And Prof Hicks should know that other sites are reprinting the attack on him. We list three of them on our blog and suggest they all take responsibility for their errors, for besmirching his character, and that they all pay some restitution to his Center. I doubt they’ll take individual responsibility for their actions, however. Conservatives are more interested in imposing their values on others, than imposing them on themselves.

  9. The positive side of this mistake is that the anti-socialist crowd at the Big Sites have learned the value in being skeptical about articles, even when they conform to our preconceptions. And we now know who Stephen Hicks is.

This is not the first time a journalist jumped the gun, nor will it be the last. I am sure that Kyle Olsen will be more careful next time. Friendly fire is embarrassing. On the other hand, in conservative circles, mistakes like this are usually quickly uncovered and the author is called on it, as was the case here.

I am pretty sure that the number of people who want to hear what Dr Hicks has to say has grown substantially.

  10. Alfred Centauri

Good to see that sanity has prevailed and that, as DesertYote points out, Olson’s silly “under-researched post” may ultimately benefit Dr. Hicks’ decidedly non-Marxist ends.

I think your response, Dr. Hicks, to Olson’s post is spot on – classy and with perfect pitch.

  11. James Peron -“Marsha: No doubt you are correct. What you are seeing is what passes as “serious research” in conservative circles. Once you are convinced that you speak on behalf of some deity then there is little need for deceptive things like facts.”

Ad Hominem. One person makes one mistake and you are claiming that this damns a whole movement. Are you also claiming that no left-winger ever made a mistake? Are you claiming that you never made a mistake?

James Peron: “Conservatives are more interested in imposing their values on others, than imposing them on themselves.”

And no left-winger ever behaved that way? Once again, this is one mistake made by one person, a mistake for which he has apologized.

  12. Bob: Talking about the inherent irrationality in conservatism is not a defense of progressives. The choice isn’t between faith-based conservatism and “scientific” central-planning. One can repudiate both camps.

  13. James: I do not object to a reasoned repudiation of faith-based conservatism. What I was objecting to here was the argument that one mistake by one person is somehow proof that a whole group is in error. That is a faulty argument that does not deal with the fundamental issues. Had you given a list of other mistakes made by this same person, that would have demonstrated a pattern of unreliability and destroyed his credibility as a source.

But that still would not have demonstrated the falsity of faith-based conservatism. For that, you have to deal with their arguments themselves, not the personalities involved. BTW, I do agree that faith-based conservatism is false.

  14. Rafe Champion

Like the time a conservative librarian culled Popper’s Open Society and its Enemies after it was donated to a public library because it had a red cover and it was about Marx!

  15. Nathaniel Branch

Wait… so does that mean I need to cancel my request to Cuba for 5 crates of fully automatic … err pamphlets?

    I feel so betrayed.

    SHAME ON YOU.

  16. Prof. Hicks:

I used to live in Rockford long long ago. I find it amusing that you teach there. While like others, I enjoyed your work on Nietzsche & the Nazis, when it comes to accidentally dropping in on You Tube on your lecture on Marxist teachers in a Capitalist System, it is very hard to not see you as a typical dyed in the wool frustrated Marxist-leaning underpaid professor who hates capitalism because less intelligent people make a whole lot more money in the real world free market by providing services deemed to be of far greater value than the intellectual drivel that most professors dish out as part and parcel of their existence. I ran into a few such profs long ago.

From my perspective you did a very poor job of critiquing Marxist education philosophy AS YOU PRESENTED IT, or else you did an excellent job in explaining it as if you are true hardcore believer.

Either way is unacceptable and you of all people should know better. The evidence of history clearly shows that people are not all the same and some will achieve significantly more in life (by their own efforts) than others and have the right reap the reward therefrom.

Socialism is both an intellectual and economic failure because it assumes that everyone should and will get an equal slice of the socio-economic pie regardless of their input to it. As the old saying goes “Socialism is great until you run out of other people’s money to spend”. Which is usually pretty quickly, and its at that point the mass murders begin.

  17. JB : You clearly don’t understand what Marxism is. That whole thing about ” it assumes that everyone should and will get an equal slice of the socio-economic pie regardless of their input to it” is pretty much wrong. Marxism means that the people who produce the surplus value also get that surplus. I advice you to read more about it.

  18. Marx: You appear to be ignorant and unable to interpret text. The “equal slice of socio-economic pie” equates to surplus value. What the Russians found out was that Marx never anticipated excess surplus value. Meaning that Stalin (i.e. the Controller of the Proletarian State) drove the economy solely for armament and war purposes to protect the state at the expense of the so called “people” it was supposed to represent. This resulted in production for the STATE in which the workers got their SURPLUS VALUE alright! Plenty of Rubles but nothing to buy with them. Shortages of all basic items including food (which was being exported).

Excess surplus value never changed. This is why years later, that Russians would pay foreigners outrageous amounts of money just to get a pair of Levi jeans. Even the Russians didn’t want to buy the junk they made. So much for surplus value.

Excess surplus value is the inevitable socio-economic outcome of Marxism as a state that is accountable to no one will seek its own survival first at the expense of the people it controls. Shortages, starvation, mass murder and repression are what has ALWAYS OCCURRED.

By the way the correct word is ADVISE not ADVICE.
And I ADVISE you go study history and actually engage your brain in a critically unbiased way and you will see the obvious that people of your mentality always seem to conveniently ignore.

This is only one of the many flaws in Marxism, but if you can’t get this one then you will inevitably be blind to the rest of them as well.
